The Truth Behind Vonka's Special Effects Magic Pigments (SEMP)
Why are they sold in very small jars, and why are the jars not full, but still cost a lot?
- This type of duochrome color-shift pigments are expensive everywhere
- We use high-quality jars from a New York company, but these are the smallest we can get with this level of quality. As a result, they may seem a little too big for the pigments.
- The density of each pigment varies, so 2 grams of pigment may fill the jars differently depending on the pigment.
- And the most important is that one small jar of SEMP is enough for 10-40 projects if used properly (and I don’t mean tiny coasters).
In Resin Art, SEMP pigments do not play the main role of colorants; rather, they are meant to complement them in specific ways, which I explain in further detail.
The purpose of SEMP is to:
- Shift the color of resin that is already colored with any opaque or translucent sparkle-free pigment, like resin pigment pastes, acrylic paint, or alcohol ink.
- Bring extraordinary shimmer to the color.
- Create multidimensional effects, adding a magical and regal quality to any resin project.
- Create stunning resin dirty pours.
- Create stunning galaxy art➡️ Galaxy Art
- Create decorative, stunning elements in resin art
- Create a subtle twinkle effect in the final clear coat, offering a gentle shimmer that is more delicate than traditional glitter

- SEMP are highly concentrated: A tiny amount goes a long way. Use a tiny toothpick to add just a pinch to your resin for dazzling results.
- Amount to Use: If you are planning to cover an 18" round canvas with opaque colored resin mixed with SEMP use 2-3 toothpick scoops of pigment. (Always start with a smaller amount.)
- Light Interaction: These pigments intensify under artificial lighting, creating a more pronounced sparkle. This makes them perfect for producing dramatic and dynamic effects. When recording your projects, use a flashlight to capture the full shimmer. Suggest that buyers of your wall art or resin tables use additional lighting to enhance the magic (well, no diamond shines in a dark drawer 🙂)
- Resin Art Embellishments: Mix one or a few pigments with clear resin (each pigment should be mixed separately, unless intended otherwise) and apply as delicate lines or accents to enhance geode art and similar resin projects. Apply to a hardened resin project, or apply while the resin is curing by pushing the lines deep into the resin. After the final coat, it will look stunning. Adding the lines to resin that's too runny will cause them to spread all over the project—keep this in mind if you want to control the effect.
- Dirty Resin Pours: Create stunning effects by layering different pigments into a single cup to form a dirty pour. I like to add white and black resin to the cup for a striking effect and to separate colors. Check out our➡️ Free Vonka's Resin Dirty Pour Tips and read a detailed description of the video.
- Resin and Alcohol Inks: Add pigments to resin mixed with translucent alcohol ink to achieve shimmering effects in jewelry, small DIY projects, pyramids, crystals, and other mold-based creations. Use it in layered abstract resin art for stunning 3D effects as well.
- Opaque Resin Applications: When mixed with resin colored with opaque resin pastes or acrylic paints, the Special Effects Magic Pigments bring depth, shimmer, and striking color shifts. Always test small amounts before starting a big project. These pigments are not suitable for direct use in acrylics, unless the acrylic paint is being used as a colorant for resin. Otherwise, the pigments will sink and lose their shimmering qualities.
- Final Clear Coat: Some pigments can be added to the final clear coat to create a subtle twinkle effect, offering a gentle shimmer that is more delicate than traditional glitter. Note: Artists often add too much pigment to the final coat. For example, one small jar of Star Dust would be enough to bring the twinkle effect to about 20 projects of size 2'x4' (60cm x 120cm).
- Test Before Applying on Big Projects: For best results, try these testing methods:
- Clear Resin Test: Dip a toothpick in clear resin and then in the pigment of your choice. Smear it onto a small tile painted with the color you plan to use and observe how the pigment shifts and interacts with the surface color.
- Opaque Resin Test: To see how the pigment changes when mixed with an opaque pigment, dip a toothpick in resin mixed with resin paste or acrylic paint and then add your chosen pigment. Apply to a test tile to evaluate the effect.
- A very cool and creative way of testing these pigments is by making abstract art on a small canvas. Believe me, it will always work, and you’ll end up with a piece of art! For example:
- Paint the canvas with black acrylic paint.
- Prepare black resin and pour it onto the canvas.
- Wait until the resin starts thickening.
- Take a few small cups and add half a teaspoon of resin in each.
- Dip a toothpick in resin and then in one of the Special Effects Magic Pigments. Do this until you have a few cups with different colors (you don't have to use all of the pigments; just a few can do the job).
- You can pour each color in one spot next to each other.
- Use a small piece of paper towel, place it on the pigments, press gently with your fingers, and drag it across the canvas—watch the magic happen!
- After it's done, use a toothpick to scoop up the leftover pigments and apply them to the canvas to define the shapes.
- The next day, using gold or silver metallic markers, draw some lines to give your design more character, and pour clear resin to finish the project.
- If you have interesting stones or crystals, you can add them onto the wet resin (if they are crystal points, you need to apply them using hot glue or UV resin before the last coat).
